UPDATE: The third installment has gotten a title: G.I. JOE: EVER VIGILANT. An offer has been made to DWAYNE JOHNSON to reprise his role as ‘Roadblock’ and the studio is just waiting for him to accept.

Based on a script from JOSH APPELBAUM and ANDRE NEMEC (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol), the film follows ‘Roadblock’ as he “assemble a new team of Joes to stop terrorists from launching a dark matter WMD that will turn their targets to dust”.

‘G.I. Joe: Ever Vigilant’ is officially set to hit theaters on March 27th, 2020. That gives ‘The Rock’ plenty of time to free up his schedule to return to the franchise.

Stay tuned for more details.

UPDATE: While out promoting ‘The Magnificent Seven’ at the Toronto International Film Festival, BYUNG-HUN LEE (who played ‘Storm Shadow’) updated the status of ‘G.I. Joe 3’ stating:

“I heard from the studio that there’s a possibility to do the third one, but I think they’re waiting for the actors’ schedules. They’re arranging the schedules for the actors, especially Dwayne Johnson.”

With a number of projects in the works including ‘Fast 8’, ‘Jumanji’, ‘Rampage’, ‘Doc Savage’, and DC’s ‘Black Adam’ solo film, it do not look like DWAYNE ‘THE ROCK’ JOHNSON’s schedule will be free anytime in the near future.

Fans will have to wait a bit longer to see the ‘Joes’ back in action. But if I have it my way, I would rather go ahead and make a ‘Snake Eyes’/’Storm Shadow’ spin-off.

UPDATE: Looks like talks with director MARTIN CAMPBELL have fallen apart. Words are that D.J. CARUSO (Disturbia, I Am Number Four) is now in talks to helm G.I. JOE 3. There is still no casting confirmation yet besides DWAYNE ‘THE ROCK’ JOHNSON returning as ‘Roadblock’.

It seems like the third installment of the G.I. JOE movie franchise may be less fantastical with more gritty realism as early talks with ‘Goldeneye’ and ‘Casino Royale’ director MARTIN CAMPBELL have begun for him to helm the project!

Looks like producer LORENZO DI BONAVENTURA (Transformers) is taking the same route as the ‘Mission Impossible’ franchise by having a different director direct each installment to inject new flavor into each one. The first ‘G.I. Joe’ was directed by STEPHEN SOMMERS (The Mummy) with over-the-top hi-tech cartoony action. ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ took it down a notch with director JON M. CHU (Step Up 2 & 3) giving it a more military feel but still keeping the fantasy elements of the Ninjas.

Now if Campbell does indeed sign onto the project, the question is will he be bringing his corny ‘Green Lantern’ style or his more gritty ‘Bond’ style to the film? Lets just hope its the latter.

The only confirmed returning cast member so far is DWAYNE ‘THE ROCK’ JOHNSON as ‘Roadblock’. Most likely fan-favorite ‘Snake Eyes’ (RAY PARK) and ‘Storm Shadow’ (BYUNG-HUN LEE) will return as well along with ‘Lady Jaye’ (ADRIANNE PALICKI). And who knows, maybe some characters from the original will be back. May we see the return of ‘Baroness’ (SIENNA MILLER)?

We will just have to wait and see. Stay tuned!
